To play the F#add9 chord, perform a barre by pressing your index finger on the C-string and bottom-A string on the 1st fret, ring finger on the 3rd fret of the top g-string, and little finger on the 4th fret of the E-string.
The F#add9 chord, also known as a Gbadd9, but sometimes referred to as an F#sus2 or Gbsus2 chord, contains the notes F#-A#-C#-G#.
To build an F#add9 chord, take the major triad formula (1-3-5) and add in the theoretical ninth scale degree (1-3-5-9) using the F# major scale, which has the notes F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#, E#.
Notice how a major scale has just seven notes. How do we get the ninth scale degree? Repeat the scale and count nine notes:
F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#, E#, F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#, E#
Note: The ninth scale degree is underlined.
Identify the first, third, fifth, and ninth scale degrees in the F# major scale which are F#-A#-C#-G#.
