Motivational Monday: “Chop Suey” on Ukulele & Glockenspiel

by Brett McQueen

Last week, I showed a video of a guy who combined a toy piano with a ukulele and a kazoo and then performed “The Final Countdown.” It’s pretty crazy, so if you haven’t seen it yet you should take a look. I asked the question if any of you have ever thought a little outside of the box for a performance.

I was thrilled when Krapo responded saying he had covered System of Down’s “Chop Suey” on ukulele and glockenspiel. If you’re not familiar with the song, it’s originally played as a heavy rock song, so to cover it on ukulele is pretty gutsy. However, I’d say Krapo did a great job.

Check his performance out:

At a first thought, you might think the ukulele is incompatible with a song that’s originally a rock song. I thought that at least. And while it might be true that ukulele might more naturally fall in one genre of music than another, it doesn’t mean we can’t think outside the box. I think we can be very quick to write an idea off and say, “Oh, that just won’t work,” when in reality, we’re just afraid of giving it a try.

I think Krapo’s videos are a great example of being willing to step outside our preconceived ideas about what can and can’t work.

Be sure to check out Krapo’s other videos on his YouTube channel at metalkrapo. He covers video game theme songs, songs from TV shows, and writes his own music. Stop over to his blog and let him know what you think!
