To play the Em chord, place the ring finger on the 4th fret of the C-string and index finger on the 2nd fret of the bottom A-string. Let the other strings ring open.
The E minor chord contains the notes E-G-B.
To build an Em chord, take the minor triad formula (1-b3-5) and apply it to the E major scale (E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#).
Identify the first, third, and fifth scale degrees in an E major scale which are E-G#-B.
Because the chord Em is a minor chord, lower the third scale degree a half step in accordance with the minor triad formula, which results in the notes E-G-B for the E minor chord.
