To play the Eadd9 chord, perform a barre by pressing your index finger on the top g-string and bottom-A string on the 2nd fret, ring finger on the 4th fret of the C-string, and little finger on the 4th fret of the E-string.
The Eadd9 chord, sometimes referred to as an Esus2 chord, contains the notes E-G#-B-F#.
To build an Eadd9 chord, take the major triad formula (1-3-5) and add in the theoretical ninth scale degree (1-3-5-9) using the E major scale, which has the notes E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#.
Notice how a major scale has just seven notes. How do we get the ninth scale degree? Repeat the scale and count nine notes:
E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#
Note: The ninth scale degree is underlined.
Identify the first, third, fifth, and ninth scale degrees in the E major scale which are E-G#-B-F#.
