To play the Cadd9 chord, place the ring finger on the 5th fret of the bottom A-string. Let the other strings ring open.
The Cadd9 chord, sometimes referred to as a Csus2 chord, contains the notes C-E-G-D.
To build a Cadd9 chord, take the major triad formula (1-3-5) and add in the theoretical ninth scale degree (1-3-5-9) using the C major scale, which has the notes C, D, E, F, G, A, B.
Notice how a major scale has just seven notes. How do we get the ninth scale degree? Repeat the scale and count nine notes:
C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A, B
Note: The ninth scale degree is underlined.
Identify the first, third, fifth, and ninth scale degrees in the C major scale which are C-E-G-D.
