To build a Am chord, take the minor triad formula (1-b3-5) and apply it to the A major scale (A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G#).
Identify the first, third, and fifth scale degrees in a A major scale which are A-C#-E.
Because the chord Am is a minor chord, lower the third scale degree a half step in accordance with the minor triad formula, which results in the notes A-C-E for the A minor chord.
